Here at Sweet-Brook we raise a critically endangered species of Heritage Hogs, the “Large Black Hog”. These Hogs are listed on “The Livestock Conservancy” and “The Rare Breed Survival Trust’s” critically endangered livestock list. The Large Black is recognized as critically endangered worldwide. There are currently around 1330 registered Large Black hogs in the United States and about 5000 unregistered, a fraction of the number needed to ensure the long term health of this breed.. . The Large Black Hog is native to Cornwall, Devon, and Somerset in southwestern England and one of the oldest breeds in England. Originally known as the Lop Eared Black, the breed was selected for large size, docile nature, and efficiency of production on pasture and other forages. The breed’s popularity peaked during the 1920s. . . After World War II, however, the shift toward large scale assembly line and fast growing Hybrid Hogs took over (leading to the current pork purchased in supermarkets today- fed on GMO corn, soybean, antibiotic and hormone laden feeds). This led to the decline of the Large Black Hog as they were not compatible with this new style of production.
