Detailed description is Superior Search and Rescue of Houghton, Michigan, USA, is a ground-based, volunteer organization assisting Houghton and Keweenaw County law enforcement agencies in finding missing persons. Our emphasis is on providing trained ground searchers, command organization, and incident communications. While SSAR can only be called out by a law enforcement agency, we are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We do not provide water or technical searching (mine shaft, high-angle) services. We also are not a medical first responder organization. We partner with local agencies (typically fire departments) that provide the “rescue” component of search and rescue. However, we welcome any first responders to our group.. . We cover a very large area. Houghton and Keweenaw Counties combined is about a two hour drive north to south and a 30 minute drive east to west ( a total of 1600 square miles). The northern half is mostly northern forest (conifer, maple, aspen, birch) while the south end has a good number of open fields. Significant features include Cliff Drive (a mile long +150 ft. tall basalt bluff), numerous abandoned mineshafts, and miles of logging roads. The area is criss-crossed by numerous streams, all heading toward Lake Superior. The main towns are Houghton and Hancock (twin cities, pop. 12,000 but with Michigan Technological University in session it’s near 18,500). Other important towns include Calumet (pop 7,000 & once candidate for the state capital) and Copper Harbor (pop. 104). Annual snowfall is about 250-300 inches and flies from mid October to mid May.. . Besides local law enforcement, we work very closely with the Amature Radio Emergency Services (ARES) team in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, Ahmeek Fire/Rescue, and Civil Air Patrol.. . The team is a completely volunteer in nature and is totally funded through donations from local government, businesses, and citizens. Members pay for own equipment and other expenses. Currently, we have about 40 members, about a quarter of them are students at Michigan Tech. We welcome anyone interested in search and rescue and are very flexible with time commitments. Each meeting usually consists of a business session and a training session. We try to have several mock searches every year.. . In 2014, SSAR become a registered 501(c)3 organization to assist with fundraising.. . In recent years, SSAR and its partner organizations have assisted in many events in the local community. This has given our members great practice for our communication and tracking procedures.
