The history of St.
Patrick's begins in 1854 with Catholic Irish immigrants.
The town of Sheffield was laid out by the Sheffield Mining & Railroad Company in 1852.
For years, beginning in 1854, priests traveled throughout the area and would come to Sheffield every 3 months, at first, to celebrate Mass at Mr Egan's home, beside the railroad tracks.
Later on at Mr Murtaugh's home, then at the Whipple's Hall.
Missionary priests traveled first from St Patrick's, LaSalle; the first recorded priest being Fr Lynch.
Then priests from Immaculate Conception of Lacon, Mendota, and finally St Malachy of Geneseo came to offer the Mass.
Starting in 1864, beginning with Fr O'Farrell, pastor at Mendota, Masses were offered monthly at the 1st wooden Catholic church, on the 300 block of west Walnut St.
The Sheffield Mining & Railroad Company deeded property, for a church and a school to be built, to the Most Reverend James Duggan, Archbishop of Chicago, and his successors.
The purchase price was $2.
The Diocese of Peoria was established in 1867 with Most Reverent John Lancaster Spalding as the 1st bishop.

In 1877, St Patrick's became a parish church, with the first resident priest being Fr Grogan.
At that time the wooden church was moved to west Aktinson St, to a new stone foundation, the location of the present church.
On May 31, 1885 a new brick church was dedicated, built at its current location, on west Atkinson St.
A new rectory was built just east of the church in 1889 at 231 W Atkinson.
In 1920, 2 wings were added to the church to handle the increasing number of parishioners, on the east and west sides.
A parish hall was built in 1961 just east of the rectory.
