Every Sunday, 8am Rite I Spoken or 10:30am Rite II with Music St. John's is a diverse community of believers and seekers, founded in 1692. Our diversity is based in our love for Christ, the community, and each other. Our philosophy is that we seek to know Christ not as parishioners but as family, and all are welcome to join our family. . . During the months of July & August, we gather on Sunday mornings to celebrate the Holy Eucharist Rite II at 9am. September through June, we gather on Sunday mornings to celebrate the Holy Eucharist Rite I at 8am, and Holy Eucharist Rite II at 10:30am. We also gather on the third Sunday of the month for Choral Evensong Rite I at 7pm.. . What is a Eucharist?. It goes by several names: Holy Communion, the Eucharist (which literally means "thanksgiving"), mass. But whatever it's called, this is the family meal for Christians and a foretaste of the heavenly banquet. As such, all persons are welcome to receive the bread and wine, and be in communion with God and each other.. . What does Rite I or Rite II mean? . Rite I reflects the language and piety of the Elizabethan era and the first Book of Common Prayer. A contemplative service, it is offered at St. John's as a spoken service without music. . . Rite II reflects more fully the influence of the liturgical movement and contemporary theology. Rite II liturgies tend to reflect greater sensitivity for inclusiveness. Our youth lead us through worship on 2nd Sundays of the month at this service. Music is an important part of this service. Our Minister of Music leads us through worship with our Chancel Choir, Youth Choir, and Praise Team. Our music ministry enhances our worship experience and offers diversity and inclusiveness by presenting different genres of music such as Anglican chant, Caribbean, Classical, Contemporary Gospel, old-school Gospel, Jazz, Praise Music, and Taize. They also sing in several different languages; English, French, Latin, Spanish. . . Choral Evensong – choral evening prayer – prayers ancient and modern prayed twice through singing. The service of Evening Prayer in our tradition goes back a long way. It was already present in the English Book of Common Prayer, published in 1662. Anglican Morning Prayer followed the Roman Catholic form of Matins, the first of eight daily prayer services that comprised the ‘Divine Hours’. In a similar way, Evening Prayer followed the form of Vespers, held traditionally before Compline at the ‘lighting of the lamps’. Certainly, regular usage of Evening Prayer at many of the major Anglican cathedrals in England predates the 1662 prayer book by hundreds of years, inherited from the Catholic faith.
