My name is Ken Zebley, Founder and Owner of Spartan Functional Fitness.
Like most fitness professionals I have had a lifelong interest in sports and keeping fit.
I did not, however, chose to make it a career until much later than most.
I believe this has allowed me to have a greater understanding of what it's really like to have a full time job, family, friends, and yet still find the time and energy to stay in shape..

Like most kids, I played all the usual sports growing up, soccer, baseball, basketball and football, but it wasn't until high school that I discovered running.
Track and cross country really appealed to me, not because I was particularly good, but primarily because you were eventually rewarded for the hard work you put in.
I continued competitive running through college and that really helped emphasize the importance of not just having goals, but the necessity of having a realistic plan to achieve them..

In the years since college I have worked to "balance out" my fitness so that, although I can still run a decent 5k, I have actually spent more time working on strength goals.
It was during this time that I was working for the U.S Forest Service as a Wildland Fire Fighter and I began to realize the importance of functional fitness.
To be effective as a fire fighter you had to have an incredible amount of strength, endurance, and stamina just to make it though the16 hour work days that lasted for weeks at a time.
Just going to the gym, or just hiking or running was not going to be enough.
You needed a decent amount of specific types of training and again, just like competitive running, you needed a good plan.
As time went on, I was asked to help design training programs for other crew members and that's when I began to envision a career helping others achieve their fitness goals..

Today, I work and train out of a few local gyms as well as private homes and local parks.

I am currently certified as a personal trainer through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as well as a certified Functional Movement Specialist, Level 1, through Functional Movement Systems (FMS).
I am also AED and CPR certified through the American Red Cross.
