Southwest Michigan Community Development Corporation

Calhoun,

Michigan,United-states - 49037

Detailed description is Our vision is to empower individuals, families, neighborhoods and businesses to grow, add value to physical environments and the quality of life and vitali January 1, 2016, Neighborhoods Inc.
of Battle Creek begins doing business under a new name; one that more accurately describes the true nature and scope of its work, Southwest Michigan Community Development Corporation (SWMCDC.org).
The new Southwest Michigan Community Development Corporation business model has increased emphasis on residential, small business and commercial financial products and capital investment to support quality of life and community growth.
.
.
Since 1981, Neighborhoods, Inc.
of Battle Creek has worked to build its brand and provide needed capital, investment, programs and services in the Battle Creek community.
In 1991, the organization initiated a substantial expansion of programming and capacity building when it joined the NeighborWorks America network of community development organizations.
Now, twenty-five years following the 1991 transformation, NIBC is again responding to environmental change.
.
.
It is no longer sufficient to merely have good reflexes to changing conditions in our environment; it is necessary to shift the organization’s operational paradigm to remain at the leading edge for providing leadership and support for community revitalization.
This strategic shift is necessary to better align previously untapped capacity as a community and economic development entity.
Much of our work in the past has left the perception of a narrowly defined organization serving only as a neighborhood-specific agency whose activities stopped with the sale or financing of a home or at the boundary of targeted neighborhoods.
Rarely has our activity been linked to the entire continuum of community development.
Our future success will speak more directly to building infrastructure needed to support the workforce, attract more residents, industry, jobs and small business creation.
The desired outcome is community growth..
.
We must keep in the front of our minds the fact that the financial health and stability of families, the physical condition of our residential and commercial properties directly correlate to property values.
Our neighborhoods are the foundation of the community’s capacity to sustain growth.
Today, communities like Battle Creek must be much more intentional about connecting the dots between neighborhood health and the vibrancy of the community as it is perceived by those living in the community and those that could be looking for a new destination.
.
.
A sign of the times, regrettably, is that less and less funds are available to invest in homes/neighborhoods improving property values and the health of neighborhoods.
Our homes remain a primary source for building family wealth and stability.
We must, once again, make neighborhood capital investment a high community priority.
Without that commitment, our children’s safety and stability is sacrificed and that impacts their capacity to learn and grow, and parents are more challenged to maintain positive nurturing environments for their children’s development.
There isn’t much that is more important to a family’s quality of life than its home, whether they rent or own.
Admittedly, these can be complex and difficult issues to grasp; but, acknowledging that there is not enough funding to cure those issues does not excuse us from making an intentional effort and investment towards making conditions better.
Neighborhood health and community development cannot be separated from childhood development, talent development, small business creation, economic development and employment.
.
The transformed business model for SWMCDC retains the core program lines of business of Neighborhoods, Inc.: Education and Counseling, Community Building and Engagement, Asset Management and Development of affordable housing, and Residential Mortgages and Small Business Lending.
Expertise in affordable housing management and development and lending will provide the platform for the other two program lines.
Community Building and Engagement, and Education and Counseling programs will continue to support better informed, inspired and financially prepared families that are needed to fuel the community’s revitalization.
.
.
Gradually moving the organization to a larger scale will enable us to compete for larger opportunities.
The scale and scope of community development organizations matter significantly when competing for capital at state and national levels.
The mandate should be clear to everyone; the future of real “needle-moving” community development, in small and mid-sized communities like Battle Creek, is directly linked to capital investment.
.
.
The structure, intent and purpose of this transformation is to make Southwest Michigan CDC a driving force at the forefront of building human capital in the neighborhoods served.
The vision adopted by the community through the recent BC Visioning Culture of Vitality work, in essence, set as a goal improvement in the quality of life for all that choose to live, work and play in the community.
That goal statement crystalizes NIBC’s work over the past 35 years.
Now as Southwest Michigan CDC, we intend to be a vehicle to help move that goal forward.
This is no small endeavor and will require substantial collaboration from all those called to undertake this mission.
.
.
Southwest Michigan Community Development Corporation (a.k.a.
Neighborhoods, Inc.) is a charter member of NeighborWorks America, a national network of community development organizations that receives a portion of its annual funding directly from the United States Congress.
It is also a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), a program of the United States Treasury Department; a Michigan licensed mortgage lender; a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) as certified by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); HUD Certified Housing Counseling Organization and a Member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBI).

As we begin this grand New Year, we hope the entire Battle Creek and Calhoun County community will continue to support us as we make our transformation and join with us in this work.
