South Weare Improvement Society

16 Deering Center Rd

Hillsborough,Others

New-hampshire,United-states -

Detailed description is The building that the South Weare Improvement Society built became known by two names: Osborne Memorial Hall and .
the Grange Hall.
February 25, 2016, marked the centennial of the incorporation of the nonprofit South Weare Improvement Society (SWIS).
Frank L.
Eastman, Mabel D.
Eastman, and Allen W.
Sawyer, all of South Weare, met at the office of Louis B.
Wyman in Manchester on February 24, 1916, to draw up the document of incorporation, and it was signed by the Secretary of State the following day.
.
Before the South Weare Improvement Society was formed, the village of South Weare had no meeting place.
A tavern, school, stores, and homes were the sites of Literary Society debates, band practice, entertainment, and Grange meetings.
Then Nellie Osborne’s will bequeathed a legacy in memory of her husband Wellman “to benefit his native place.” SWIS formed to make use of the money, and with additional donations from South Weare citizens, a community meeting place—Osborne Memorial Hall—was planned.
The organization purchased land owned by George Hazen on Deering Center Road; and Albert Farmer, Sr., built the hall with lumber supplied by Forrest Dearborn of Tavern Village..
Osborne Memorial Hall nicely fulfilled its function as a community hall throughout the 20th century.
Wyoming Grange #54 found a permanent home.
Besides the Grange, the hall became the focal point for various community activities: school functions, dances, concerts, dinners, plays, card parties, wedding receptions, showers, church services, lawn parties, and, during 1926-1927, a teacher’s institute.
.
In 1995, Osborne Hall was saved from slow destruction from the elements by the replacement of the roof.
Activities at the hall, including the Grange, ceased and the building slowly succumbed to dust and small animals who found a home for the winter..
However, the South Weare Improvement Society still had a treasurer, Verna Martin, and a secretary, Mildred Hall.
Mildred had the keys to the building, and as the century turned the corner, she gave a new group, some of whom were also Weare Historical Society directors, a tour that fostered a new generation of SWIS activity.
.
The rest, as they say, is history.
The South Weare Improvement Society has worked since 2001 to restore the hall.
New systems were installed: well, septic, heating, electric, plumbing.
Inside, cleaning, paint, repair, window replacement, and restoration of floors took place.
Outside, roof patching, replacement of damaged exterior shingles, new and improved entryways, and parking lot improvements were accomplished..
With hard work, donations and dues, bequests and other gifts, thanks are due to the many who have helped with, or supported, the repairs and renovations to further the promise of this community meeting place and historic landmark.
Activities and events now occur on a regular basis year round.
To rent the hall for your event, please contact President Rad Betts at 529-7282..
There is more to be accomplished.
If you would like to donate time or funds, you can contact the number above or write to SWIS, PO Box 392, Weare, NH 03281..
