Detailed description is Mission: South Padre Island ArtSpace is a vibrant creative learning place where every level of artistic expression is thoughtfully explored. Our goal is to enrich our community by actively promoting the arts through education, sponsorship & outreach. South Padre Island Art Space evolved out of a community of Artist that started doing ceramics and other crafts together weekly in their garages. After two years, the group joined other ceramicists and started a ceramic studio. In one year the ceramicists joined with other artists of varying mediums and created the South Padre Island Art Space.. . The art space is located in South Padre Island, Texas about 1700 sq ft. about 800 sq. ft. is dedicated to a ceramic studio. 500Sq ft. is dedicated to a space for painting, fiber arts, crafts, etc. 400 sq ft. is dedicated to retail space where artists can sell their creations.. . In order to sustain the art space, 14 “keyholders” agreed to pay a monthly membership fee of $100 for one year. This amount would pay the rent and electricity. Additional funds brought in through retail commission sales and workshop/class fees would supplement the expenses.. . The “keyholder” in return would be given 24/7 access to the space, the use of the equipment and a 80/20 commission rate on artwork sale. The keyholder would also be obligated to work retail shifts Tuesday through Saturday 10:00am to 2:00pm throughout the year.. . Other membership levels were created that would allow more participation from the community.. . The South Padre Island Art Space opened its doors to the public on February 1, 2011. Workshops in fiber art and painting were held in the following two months. These classes were given by visiting Wintering Texas. The classes were filled. It was clear that the Art Space was providing a creative art outlet for the public. Both residents and visitors benefited.. . Besides workshops, “studio days” featuring an “Open Painting Day:, a “Clay Day”, and a “Craft Day” were established. Only a fee of $5.00 charged. In this way the SPI Art Space could provide an art experience to the public at a very affordable cost. . . The next step was to plan and promote a summer art program for kids. The goal was to provide art classes for both residents and visitors..
