The Grand Lodge official site is http://grandlodgeofvirginia.org/ At the Grand Annual Communication held in Richmond on October 28, 1787, nine years after the Grand Lodge of Virginia was organized, a petition requesting a charter to establish a Lodge in Smithfield, Isle of Wight County, was presented to Most Worshipful Edmond Randolph, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia. This petition was signed by J. Van Wagennen, Thomas Smith, Solomon Wilson, Patrick Ronaldson, Thomas Pierce, George Robinson and Charles Fulgam. On October 29, 1787, a charter was issued to the following authorizing them to hold a Lodge in Smithfield to be designated as Smithfield Union Lodge No. 18: . . James Belchus (spelled Belcher on the charter) Worshipful Master. . G. J. Van Wagennen (spelled Wagener on the charter) Senior Warden. . Thomas Smith Junior Warden . . It is interesting to note that James Belchus, a delegate of Cabin Point Royal Arch Lodge at the convention of Masons that elected the first Grand Master of Masons in Virginia, was never actually installed as Worshipful Master. . . There appears to be a discrepancy in the records as to who was actually installed as the first Worshipful Master. A history written by Dr. T. S. Dunaway in 1912 indicated that at the first meeting held on March 4, 1788, Thomas Smith was installed as Worshipful Master. However, a list of Past Masters placed in the Lodge indicates that Garrett J. Van Wagennen was Worshipful Master in 1788-1789 and Thomas Smith was Worshipful Master 1790-1791. . . At that first meeting, seven petitions were read for initiation. According to Dunaways history, by January 1, the membership was eighty-four.. . The first home of this Lodge was a schoolhouse, which was built for the Elizabeth Smith Free School for Poor Children dating back to 1753. The Lodge was given permission to build a new story upon the old one and an addition of twelve feet to the end of the building. The schoolhouse remained the home of the Lodge until 1914. On July 12, 1914, during a storm, a huge Elm tree fell on the north side of the building. Instead of trying to repair the damage to a building some 160 years old, the Lodge moved to another abandoned schoolhouse known as the Smithfield Academy, built in 1826. After many years, the Lodge secured a clear title to the academy property and it was sold to the Methodist Church for $5,500, which was applied to a fund for a new building. Since the Lodge still had title to the original site, the lot was cleared and a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new building was held on December 3, 1957. . . Before the new building was started, $10,000 had been raised toward its construction. Additional financing was arranged and the grand opening of the new temple was held on June 15, 1959. Most Worshipful Dr. Walter A. Porter, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia, dedicated it on September 27, 1965. . . Smithfield Union has furnished two Grand Masters of Masons in Virginia; John H. Purdie, December 14, 1819 - December 11, 1821 and John R. Purdie, December 10, 1844 - December 15, 1846. In 1889, Right Worshipful George H. Jordan was Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Virginia and would probably have been duly elected Grand Master of Masons in Virginia except for his untimely death.. .
