A história da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Barretos iniciou-se em 1918, quando algumas pessoas procuraram o padre José Martins, que era pároco em Barretos, e pediram ajuda para construir um hospital.. O padre se propôs a doar o terreno, onde hoje está localizada a Santa Casa e que pertencia à Igreja. Ele pediu licença ao bispo da diocese de Jaboticabal, à qual Barretos pertencia naquele tempo, que prontamente concedeu o terreno para que fosse construída a obra.. Pessoas da comunidade iniciaram uma coleta de doações, viabilizando o início da construção da Santa Casa de Barretos. No dia 09 de Janeiro de 1921, a Santa Casa abriu as suas portas e o primeiro paciente internado foi Anibal Calabrez, no dia 3 de abril, do mesmo ano.. Iniciou-se os atendimentos com duas enfermarias e 12 leitos.
