Detailed description is Nonprofit organization created to spread heart defect awareness, and help families of children with heart defects. The mission of the Sam Vlasics Foundation is to help children with congenital heart defects and their families. Our goal is to provide support to local CHD families, fund research, and promote advocacy and awareness through community education. Two of the charities we support are the American Heart Association and the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House. We are a registered private foundation and our non-profit status is pending.. . So who is Sam Vlasics?? He is our inspiration. Sam was born on May 25, 2010 with two life-threatening heart defects. He had open-heart surgery at one week old, and again at four months. Possibly one more procedure is in Sam's future. He is monitored every six months by Dr. John Murphy at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. Sam is an active little boy, attending preschool and playing soccer. And he keeps up with his big brother, Jack! He has been through some major things in his young life, but you would never know it!. . As a family, we are actively involved with the American Heart Association. We volunteer on the Lehigh Valley Heart and Stroke Walk Committee and are also involved in advocating for pulse oximetry testing for all newborns in Pennsylvania. Pulse oximetry is a simple, painless, inexpensive test to screen for heart defects in newborns. It is not a mandatory test in Pennsylvania. Many hospitals perform this test anyway, but why should a baby born at a hospital that does not use pulse oximetry have less of a chance of having a heart defect detected than a baby born where this test is performed. Sam was featured with many other CHD children as one of the Faces of Hope, and his picture was on display in the Capital Rotunda during the month of February. HB 1420 has passed unanimously in the House, and now we're working on the Senate :) . . Comprised of family and friends, Team Sam is our Lehigh Valley Heart & Stroke Walk team. The Heart Walk is the American Heart Association's largest fundraiser. Sam served as the 2013-2014 Child Chair. . . We are also the organizers of the Warm Hearts 5K (www.facebook.com/WarmHearts5K)
