Detailed description is 琉球ガラスとは、沖縄の自然や文化に根ざし、沖縄の地で手作りされたガラス工芸品のことです。 ■琉球ガラスの歴史と特徴.

沖縄で初めてガラスが作られたのは明治中旬ごろといわれており、長崎や大阪から来た職人の技術によって、那覇の西町に工場が建ちました。.
当時は主にランプのほや、漬け物瓶等実用的な製品が作られていました。.

■戦後の琉球ガラス.
.
戦後の琉球ガラスを、琉球ガラス生産・販売協同組合の組合員でもあり、沖縄で現存するガラス工房の中で最も古い奥原硝子製造所の歴史も交えながら紹介します。戦後、沖縄におけるガラス工場の復興は、戦後からつくっていた人たちや、疎開先から引き上げて来たガラス職人たちが生産をはじめました。.
数ある沖縄の伝統工芸のなかで、最も歴史が浅い琉球ガラス、ガラス工芸として脚光をあびたのは戦後になってからです。.
沖縄における戦後ガラス製造のはしりは、一九五〇年に前田正男さんが設立した一軒のガラス工場（那覇市与義）でした。.
前田正男さんは、父親の代から那覇市西町でガラス工場を経営していましたが、戦争で工場は閉鎖。.
戦後になって息子の正男さんが工場を与儀に移転し、復興させました。.
そのころの製品は、ランプの「ホヤ」や「投薬瓶」、駄菓子屋さんの店先に並ぶ「角瓶」、ガラス製の「縄取り器」、「牛乳瓶」などの日用品だったそうで、需要も沖縄全域にかなりあったそうです。.
前田さんは知人の奥原盛栄さんに相談を持ちかけました。.
奥原さんは十歳でガラス工場に見習いとして入り、戦前までガラス職人として働いていました。.
一九五二年、奥原さんは、戦前からのガラス職人・島袋栄松さんとの共同経営で、前田さんからガラス工場を譲り受け、「奥原硝子製造所」と改名し、再スタートさせました。.
現在の奥原硝子製造所の代表者である桃原正男さんは、工場ができて4年目に入社しました。.
その頃の職人は十二、三人、従業員は五十人ほどいたそうで、当時はスクガラス（アイゴの稚魚の塩漬け）を入れるための瓶など、とにかく作ればいくらでも売れていたそうです。.
しかし、その数年後、再びガラス製品は売れなりました。.
プラスチックやビニールの製品が市場に出まわり、主力製品のランプのホヤは電球に、菓子瓶はビニール袋に取ってかわられ、割れやすいガラス製品は次第に追いやられていきました。.
しかしその頃、米軍兵士の本国へのお土産とし琉球ガラスが注目を集め始めました。.
沖縄で戦前に作られていたガラス製品は、廃瓶を利用した透明なものでしが、戦後アメリカから入ってくる色付きの瓶で色付きガラス製品を作ってみたところ、アメリカ人に興味をもって迎えられたのです。.
奥原硝子製造所では、その後アメリカの輸出に力を入れるようになり、1960年ごろになると、ロサンゼルスやサンフランシスコ、グァムなどに輸出するようになりました。.
そのころガラスには「ryukyu」の印を入れ始めており、これが「琉球ガラス」という名前が使われた最初といわれています。.

■観光とともに発展した琉球ガラス.

1975年の沖縄海洋博覧会をきっかけに観光土産品としての需要が伸び始め、琉球ガラスの生産額も増えていきました。.
各工房もただ生産するだけではなく、製作風景を見せるスタイルになり、工房でのガラスの作り方など直接説明しながら商品を売り出しました。.
大型バスが入るよう駐車場をなども完備して、積極的に観光産業に力を入れはじめました。.
その後、生産が需要に追いつかなくなる状況が続くと、観光土産品店などに海外製の琉球ガラスの模倣品がでまわるようになりました。.
加えて、その時期はどの工房でも、同じデザインのガラスが多かったこともあり、価格競争も始まりました。.
そのような状況の中、新たな工房の設立も増え、各工房は大量生産型でない、模倣されにくいガラス製品を作りだしていこうとオリジナリティーのあるデザインが生まれるようになりました。.

■原産地問題と業界の新たな取り組み.

その後も成長を続けた琉球ガラス市場でしたが、2006年6月にベトナムから輸入されたガラス製品が原産地を表示せずに、あたかも沖縄製のように販売されていたということで、琉球ガラス村グループ3社が公正取引委員会から排除命令を下されるという事態が起こり、業界に大きな衝撃を与えました。.
その後、琉球ガラス工房や流通業者が集まり、琉球ガラス業界の健全な発展のを目的に、2008年3月に「琉球ガラス生産・販売協同組合」が設立されました。
