Detailed description is A community initiative providing an opportunity for artists to collaborate and create, develop & display artworks together based the theme of ‘Ruaumoko' Background. . 2012. Our first ‘RUAUMOKO’ exhibition in 2012 was a collaborative exhibition of works by local maori clay artists & maori tattoo practitioners. The unusual pairing of these artforms were connected by the theme of the show which highlighted the whakapapa (connection) to Ruaumoko the Maori god of earthquakes and volcanic activity, the youngest child of Ranginui (Sky Father) & Papatuanuku (Earth Mother). His restlessness while in Papatuanuku’s womb (earth) caused the deep uneven grooves and ridges on her surface terrain scarring the earth and creating the first sacred forms of ‘ta moko’ (tattoo). . . We felt the kaupapa (theme) relevant to the artists involved, with references to our local volcanic landscape and history here in Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) and the more recent earthquakes & volcanic activity both here in Aotearoa and globally that was prevalent at the time and affected most of the artists involved with friends or family having endured the big quake in Christchurch 2011.. . 2013. The following ‘RUAUMOKO’ exhibition in 2013 continued with the same theme, however the show this time also involved painters & printmakers and acknowledged other recent natural disasters with a group of printmakers from Univ. of Colorado – Boulder submitting printworks about the recent catastrophic floodings there.. . . 2014. Venue: ‘Waikare on Q’ Gallery – Corner of Queen Street & Karangahape Rd, Auckland Central. Workshop: Mon 24 – Tues 25 Nov. Exhibition: Wed 26 Nov – Dec. Artists Involved: 5 x US Artists - Melanie Yazzie, Kryssi Staikidis, Michael Barnes, Jacob Meders, Sam Cikaukas & 8 x local NZ Printmakers.. . Our ‘RUAUMOKO’ exhibition & workshop for 2014 will continue this theme with a broader focus on natural disasters:. Lead up – Signs, Wildlife & Geographical Indicators.
