Chapleau is a charter member.. Mr. Harry Searle of Chapleau was present to sign the declaration and Chapleau received its Charter in 1926 as Branch No. 5. Harry Searle served his country in World War 1 in the RCA Artillery. By all accounts, he was a tireless advocate of veterans’ rights following the Great War and continued this work following WW II. He became the first President of Branch No. 5 which was later named in his honour and is now known as Harry Searle (Ont. No. 5) Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
