Route 4 Barn

1931 Dale Ln

Calvert,

Maryland,United-states - 20736

Detailed description is Help Save the Barn!.
Built in 1912, but now the barn has to move or be torn down.
This Calvert landmark needs your help, today.
The “Flag Barn “was part of a 102 acre farm purchased in 1912 by William Prindeville Norfolk for $5000.00.
.
In 1951 the property, minus 2.5 acres, was turned over by Mr.
Norfolk to his son Calvert W.
Norfolk..
In 2008 the property was turned over by Calvert & Virginia Norfolk to their daughter Anne Norfolk Brady..
The barn originally sat on the property which is now the Kelly Generator Office..
In 1923, Calvert Norfolk at the age of 15, along with the help of 2 farm hands moved the barn approximately 300 feet to its present location and reset it in two days.
This was accomplished by using only pine logs and pry bars and rolling it on the pine logs.
The original barn (24 X 40) did not have the shed portion that the flag is now painted on.
This shed was added on around 1930..
In 1991 the American Flag was painted by Heather Smith a student at Northern High School.
It was officially dedicated that year and later redone some 10 years later by American legion personnel from North Beach..
The barn sat on the area where William P.
Norfolk’s 4 square home (pictured) was built in 1925..
In 2015 James and Anne Norfolk Brady sold the property to Jason and Alan Scaggs.
The sales agreement stated that should the barn need to be moved, that it would be donated to local artist Terry Quinn from Solomons Gallery..
In 2016 Jason and Alan Scaggs decided to build on the property, thereby setting into motion the moving of the barn.
Acting on behalf of Veterans and citizens of Calvert County, Terry Quinn has decided to raise monies to move the barn from its current location to a piece of property which has been donated by Dale and Anne Norfolk (Dale is the son of Calvert Norfolk).
The barn and land are being donated to Calvert County so it can be preserved as a landmark after it is moved..
Terry Quinn in conjunction with county officials has enlisted the help of the Amish to move the barn.
Fundraising efforts are underway to begin the process.
Jason and Alan Scaggs have offered to donate the man power and equipment needed to prepare the barn's new site location..
The goal is to raise $64,000.
Monies will go to relocate/move the barn, modify the structure (shorten the width and move the flag portion of the barn to the opposite side) and put on a new metal roof..
Please help Preserve Americana!
