Parmer, Sr. was a Lancaster carpenter who had 14 children, 8 of whom became floor sanders. They were some of the first in this area. As I grew up around all of my uncles in the business, I really got to watch it grow throughout Lancaster county.. . Back in the late 60s when I was fifteen years-old, my uncle, Harry L. Parmer, asked me if I wanted to go sand floors with him for the summer. Most houses back then had hardwood floors throughout the whole house, not like today where only a few rooms are hardwood and the rest carpet. That was a lot of floors that needed sanded and finished. I spent the whole summer with my uncle really learning a lot while only watching; cleaning up sweeping floors, but never running any machines.. . Time went on and at age 19 I bought my first floor sanding outfit from my uncle Earl and just sanded and finished floors for my friends. From there it grew. . . I’ve been a part of this trade and watched it grow over the past few decades. In the 70s, shag carpet was the new craze and business slowed. Eventually in the 80s, the shag carpets were wearing out, and people started to rediscover those hardwood floors underneath as they ripped out the carpet. This got people excited again. These beautiful hardwood floors are currently a very popular trend, as well as a timeless classic. . . I really enjoyed this work, but was also painting and dry-walling. In 1990 I took a look at my floor sanders sitting in the garage and decided I wanted to focus more of my time with sanding floors. My investment and interest in sanding grew over the following years from 10-20%, to 100%. I’ve reached a point where this is a true passion and hobby of mine. I love spending my time and energy working on my sanders and edgers, refinishing floors, and working in this trade.
