How We Transformed Our Retirement In These Few Easy Steps....
We were living a completely happy life heading into our 50’s.
We thought we were reaping life’s benefits from our successful careers.
Susan as a Director of Nursing and Rich was an Executive Chef and partner of a restaurant and blues club in an upcoming neighborhood of Pittsburgh..

Why stress thinking about those things, after all, there was tomorrow for that!.

And then what seemed to be in an instant, it felt like things started slipping away.
First for Rich, in a little over one year’s time, his business partners decided to close the restaurant.
Ouch! out of work and looking for a new chef position.
Trying to find that new job put a lot of stress on him and created a number of health issues that forced him into looking for a new direction of his life and career.

Unable to find any opening in food sciences, Rich decided to give any new field a try.
Taking a tech position testing petroleum products, he hoped it would give him lab experience which would help secure a job in food lab.
Rich certainly did not approach it with the same creativity and passion as his chef career, but it was one that paid the bills and gave us income to live off.

Susan had always been a successful nurse and very professional as a Director of Nursing.
Working with long term care patients, hospitals, homecare and staffing companies led her to a present position as the Director of Nursing of a local Convent.
Providing care for this household of retired nuns brought its own unique set of challenges.
In addition to the office politics that come with any management position and the unpredictably that applies to managing almost every nursing staff, special attention had to be paid to the fact that this was not only a medical care facility for these Sisters, it was their home.
For most of them, it was their final home..

From almost day one at this job, Susan dealt with a never ending barrage of phone calls, emergency texts and other after hours problems.
Multiple times day and night there were phone calls full of problems that she to attend to immediately, often requiring her to return to the Convent after she had already put in her full day’s work.

There really was an inordinate number of staffing and scheduling issues for such a small group of employees, constantly dealing with the staff’s personal and interpersonal issues, and of course a myriad of employee call-offs.
To her credit, Susan took most of it in stride often going out her way to assist her employees, solving the staffing issues, even going out of her way to help like offering rides to and from work.
Often these interruptions came at the expense of time and events that Susan and Rich planned to spend together.

After a couple of years passed, the population of patients was declining.
A decision was made the property was being put up for sale and the Convent was closing.
It was now Susan’s time to find new employment..

But we remember the specific point in time where it all came to a halt… It was there in that moment we realized we were sick of it! .

We weren’t really living a life we wanted… we were living a life we were tolerating!.

We had been talking and dreaming of a building a business we could share.
A business where we were our own bosses, setting our own schedules, promoting products which we were interested in and believed in.
