1st United Methodist Church, Ada ~ ReStore Community Center.

History:.
ReStore Community Center was born in September of 2006 from the vision of several lay people at Ada 1st who were exploring ways that the church could more effectively reach outside its walls to engage the community and make disciples for Jesus Christ.
These people wanted to reach those who for various reasons would probably not come to Ada 1st or other established churches in the community.
At this time there were several empty buildings on the Main Street of Ada.
Also, Hardees Restaurant, a local gathering place, was being torn down.
Mark Light asked the question, “What if we rented the empty building across from the church and sold gently used clothing and had a hospitality center where people could sit with a cup of coffee and visit?” During this first conversation we had a great time brainstorming ideas and dreaming of how such a ministry might affect the community.
We talked about the needs of the lower income population of Ada and the disconnectedness and loneliness that people experienced..

Mark was passionate about this vision and went home and contacted the owner of the building.
The owner agreed to rent the building to Mark at half price until the new year if Mark would sign a lease immediately.
When Mark informed us that he had leased the building we were apprehensive, hopeful, and excited.
Our dream might become a reality! At the Administrative Board meeting we (Mark Light, Karen Ward, and I) spoke of the vision and our plans.
The Ad Board was a little shell-shocked, but agreed to help by letting the Ada 1st treasurer handle finances.
The concerns of the Ad Board centered on insurance and liability issues.
Because Mark had stepped out in faith to rent the building he assured the Ad Board that the leadership team of ReStore would not allow the ministry to jeopardize Ada 1st assets in any way.

The Adventure Begins:.
The building was in poor shape.
People from Ada 1st who were excited about the ministry came and helped clean.
The youth group painted the walls.
The ONU Habitat for Humanity students built shelves and helped remodel the backrooms and bathrooms.
A group of men from Sugar Grove donated and installed racks and shelves.
By this time many people from other churches and community organizations were interested in the ministry.
Joyce LaSala sent out a request for gently used clothing donations and organized volunteers to sort through the hundreds of bags that were left in the drop off space.
We opened for business and it was immediately apparent that a community center needed in Ada.
The store, which we named Marco’s Closet, was busy.
Even busier, was Morning Glory Café, our hospitality center where people could sit and visit with a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

Keeping Up With the Holy Spirit:.
ReStore began growing faster than we could imagine.
The Holy Spirit was definitely guiding this ministry.
People began coming to ReStore asking for help with specific needs and problems.
So we began researching what we could do to help.
We realized that we needed to keep ourselves grounded with prayer, be accountable to each other and discern where God wanted us to go with this ministry.
The leadership team, people who were engaged with the ministry on a daily basis, formed an accountability group.
We used the L3 Incubator program to shape our time together.
Under the guidance of Ada 1st ReStore filed for Articles of Incorporation.
The Ada 1st treasurer was a great help to us as we learned about what taxes we would have to pay and other legal issues..

Time To Move:.
Our original building was in poor shape – ceilings falling and floors with holes under the carpet.
In January, 2008 we moved a block south on Main Street to a better facility.
During the previous year the treasurer of Ada 1st was taking care of our bills.
Members of the leadership team and Rev.
Wayne Albertson met with Bryan Ward and his legal interns to discuss a separate 501(c)3 for ReStore Community Center.
The Ad Board had decided that this would be the best way to handle this ministry as it involved so many programs.
Another issue was the sale of gently used clothing.
ReStore Center was required to pay sales tax even though we were under the umbrella of Ada 1st.
The process of writing and filing the 501(c)3 took approximately a year.
After many discussions the bylaws were written.
It was decided that a separate Board would be formed for ReStore Center.

Forming the Board of Directors:.
The first Board of Directors of ReStore Center consisted of 9 people.

• Sue Alger, President Director of Hardin County Hospice and member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church, Hardin County.
• Mark Light, Vice-President Allen County Extension Agent and member of Ada 1st United Methodist Church.
• Christy Beaschler, Treasurer Ada Exempted Schools treasurer and member of Ada 1st United Methodist Church.
• Nancy Allison school administrator and member and lay leader of Ada 1st United Methodist Church.
• Philip Compton Board of West Ohio Food Bank and pastor of Rhinehart United Methodist Church.
• Michael Hood attorney and deacon and member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ada.
• Marilou Ruble audiologist and member of 1st Presbyterian Church of Ada.
• Sue Umphress owner of daycare center in Ada and attendee of ReStore Community Center worship services.
• Karen Ward member of Ada 1st United Methodist Church.

As a Deacon, I was immediately drawn to the ministry at ReStore Center.
As a member of the original leadership team my gifts were in administration and so I naturally gravitated to the need to research and educate ourselves about non profit ministry.
I was asked to fill the position of Director which I humbly and with much excitement, accepted..

Programs:.
The programs in place at ReStore Center are need based.
ReStore now offers:.
• Emergency food supplies through the Emergency Food and Shelter Board.
• Angel Food Ministry.
• Ohio Benefit Bank (the only site in Hardin County).
• Work force training.
• Volunteer opportunities for churches, organizations, ONU students, court appointed individuals and Jobs and Family Services work program.
• Place of employment for individuals participating in the Experience Works program for senior citizens.
• Hospitality Center where people can find fellowship, loving acceptance, and a listening ear.
• Crockpot Tuesday – the free weekly community meal.
• Bible study.
• An alternative worship service offering a seeker service.
• AEP Neighbor to Neighbor program – only site in Hardin County with counselor trained in this program.
• A Community Garden in cooperation with Sugar Grove UMC and ONU.
• ReStore Service Project.
• Prescription drug and medical education/informational classes in cooperation with Raabe School of Pharmacy at ONU.
• Education classes: parenting, Financial Peace University, computer skills.
We are in the process of forming a bipolar/depression support group..

The real ministry at ReStore Center is showing the love of Jesus Christ to every person who walks through the door.
ReStore is God’s ministry and we all feel blessed to be a part of it.
Our biggest efforts are aimed at providing an atmosphere of peace, love and acceptance for everyone who walks through the door.

Ada 1st and ReStore Today.
In 2009 Rev.
Albertson and Rev.
Searfoss worked together to apply for funds from the Disciple Making Churches revitalization grant.
The funds were designated to provide for a full time director at ReStore Community Center.
The grant was received and in January, 2010, Rev.
Searfoss went to ReStore full time.

ReStore Community Center is a mission outreach program of First UMC that is incorporated as an independent non-profit corporation.
It is housed in a building on Main Street half a block from the church.
ReStore provides human and social services rooted in worship and prayer life.
ReStore provides specifically gently used clothing and household items, Angelfood ministries; tax assistance and benefit resources through Ohio Benefit Bank; educational classes; support groups; Crockpot Tuesday (a free weekly community meal); prayer groups; Bible study; prayer shawl ministry; a worship service for seekers on Sunday mornings and more.
ReStore has provided and promises revitalization in these ways:.
• It has tapped into persons in our church and community needing a place to donate possessions useful to others apart from one’s own time and money..
• It has provided an additional outlet by which members and constituents of FUMC-Ada may volunteer locally according to the skills and gifts they have..
• It provides a way for members and constituents to meet and come to know persons of other income and educational levels than they would otherwise have..
• It provides a model of uniting church, community, and university in fellowship and helpful service activities..
• It provides an alternative form of worship to a lower income population that would not come, in essence, to any of the churches of Ada.
Some of our members provide the sustaining leadership for that worship experience..

Both ReStore’s and First UMC’s boards share representatives for mutual reporting of activities and ministries.
Volunteers are recruited from First UMC.
ReStore regularly has articles in the First UMC newsletter and bulletin.
Both the First UMC minister and the ReStore staff engage in one on one and small group conversations to explain ministries and relationships.
Members of First UMC serve and eat at the weekly community meal, attend the worship service to mentor and disciple the target population, donate financially, and volunteer as educational and support group leaders..
