De Leeuw en zijn vrienden Louis Andriessen, Misha Mengelberg, Peter Schat en Jan van Vlijmen die, met Hugo Claus en Harry Mulisch als librettisten, de opera Reconstructie over Che Guevara geschreven hadden, eisten meer aandacht voor experimentele muziek en vielen de gevestigde kunstinstituten aan. Hun bekendste actie was de verstoring in november 1969 van een door Bernard Haitink geleid concert met het Concertgebouworkest, waarvan zij de programmering wilden moderniseren.
