Mission: Changing the definition of beauty and health for every body.
Founded by psychologist Dr.
Laura Eickman in 2008, REbeL is a peer education program designed to address disordered eating and body images issues in teens in middle and high schools.
REbeL at AU is an extension of REbeL for college-aged students.
REbeL encourages members to “rebel” against our culture’s unrealistic standards of beauty, which values appearance over character and promotes low self-esteem, body bashing, conformity, the diet mentality and eating disorders, and bullying.
Through REbeL’s research-based curriculum, members are educated about body image, media literacy, eating disorders, and mindful eating & exercise and are taught to see their own and others’ beauty and value, regardless of shape or size.
Members learn to identify and dialogue about these issues, raise awareness among their peers, and lead the way in developing innovative solutions to the self-esteem and body image concerns facing so many in our society today that we’ve been conditioned to view as normative.
