Detailed description is Der Internationale Flughafen Rangun befindet sich in Mingaladon, 15 Kilometer nördlich der Innenstadt von Rangun und ist der wichtigste internationale Flughafen von Myanmar.
Er wurde 1947 von der städtischen Flughafenbehörde auf einem ehemaligen Flugplatz aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gebaut.
Die herrschende Militärregierung vernachlässigte den Flughafen aber mehr und mehr, sodass dieser nicht mehr den internationalen Anforderungen entsprach.Ein Renovierungsprogramm, das im April 2003 ins Leben gerufen wurde, führte dazu, dass ein neues Terminal gebaut und die Start- und Landebahn auf 3414 Meter verlängert wurde.
Das neue Terminal wurde im Mai 2007 eröffnet.
Nun kann der Flughafen bis zu fünf Flugzeuge pro Stunde und 2,7 Millionen Passagiere pro Jahr abfertigen.
Eine neue Bahn für schwerere Flugzeuge befindet sich noch im Bau.Das alte Terminal ist ausschließlich für Inlandsflüge gedacht, das neue für internationale Flüge.Das neue TerminalDas neue Terminal war Teil eines umfassenden Renovierungsprogramms, welches im April 2003 in Angriff genommen und im Mai 2007 fertiggestellt wurde.
In dem neuen Terminal können 900 ankommende und abfliegende Passagiere gleichzeitig abgefertigt werden.
Die von 2467 m auf 3414 m verlängerte Startbahn lässt nun auch eine Landung einer Boeing 747-400 zu.
Der Kostenaufwand für die Sanierung und den Bau betrug ungefähr 30 Millionen US-Dollar, um die IATA-Service-Standards und die ICAO-Sicherheitsstandards zu erfüllen.
