Detailed description is Inspiring, educating, and activating youth to become engaged citizens and agents of social change in their communities Public Achievement is an initiative of the Center for Democracy and Citizenship at Augsburg College. The model was adapted from the "citizenship schools" in the South during the Civil Rights era to help young people realize that they are agents of social change, and are active producers and creators of democracy.. . The Public Achievement program utilizes adult coaches who are adults and/or university students that are trained in the process and concepts of public leadership. While learning through the process, the coaches work with young people in identifying, defining, developing, and researching community issues and finding appropriate strategies in addressing, improving, or resolving the issues and then executing the plan of action. . . Since its inception, Public Achievement has been developed in various universities and colleges in the United States and abroad. To start the pilot at Cornell in 2011, the Public Service Center hired seven college students through the Community Work Study program to serve as coaches, working with Ithaca Youth Council members. The coaches assisted in hosting a Community Service day that brings youths together to better understand and care for their own communities. Since then, Public Achievement has formed partnerships with various schools in the Ithaca City School District and the Spencer-Van Etten School District. Upon being hired, Public Achievement coaches choose a site they would like to work at and spend at least one academic school year becoming connected to and invested in the students and their community. Our current partnerships include Belle Sherman Elementary, Caroline Elementary, Fall Creek Elementary, Spencer-Van Etten Middle School, and Ithaca High School.
