Cette école est située à La Flèche dans le département de la Sarthe dans la région des Pays de la Loire, aux confins du Maine, de l’Anjou et de la Touraine.À l'origine, l'institution fondée en 1604 par le roi Henri IV est confiée aux jésuites dans le but d’, elle est devenue au fil du temps le Prytanée voulu par en 1800 et installé à La Flèche en 1808, et ensuite le Prytanée national militaire.HistoriqueDu Château-Neuf à la fondation du Collège royalDevenue veuve en 1537, Françoise d'Alençon décide de se retirer en sa seigneurie de La Flèche, qu'elle avait reçue en douaire de son mari Charles de Bourbon. Le vieux château féodal de la ville, actuel château des Carmes, étant trop vétuste et sans confort, Françoise d'Alençon fait construire un nouvel édifice. Le « Château-Neuf » est alors érigé entre 1539 et 1541 en dehors des remparts de la ville, à l'emplacement du Prytanée militaire, en suivant les plans de l'architecte Jean Delespine.
