Project PORTS: Promoting Oyster Restoration Through Schools was developed in 2007 as an outreach initiative of Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory (HSRL) of Rutgers University to expand educational opportunities while improving oyster habitat and developing stewardship values.
HSRL is a world-renowned research laboratory that has supported science-based management of the Delaware Bay oyster resource and other fisheries since the late 1800s.
Situated on the banks of the Maurice River, the Laboratory has established a close relationship with Delaware Bayshore communities, serving as a neighbor, an information resource, and an advocate in promoting economic and environmental sustainability, and stewardship.

Project PORTS engages local students in stewardship through the construction of shell bags.
The shell bags that the kids build serve as the foundation of the oyster reef and provide a settlement surface for the young oysters.

Project PORTS’ restoration approach utilizes shell bags for the collection of oyster spat in a lower Bay area that typically has high abundances of oyster larvae.
By constructing and deploying these shell bags, students and citizen scientists of all ages come into direct contact the estuary and the oyster resource.
Since 2007, students from 24 schools have constructed some 10,000 shell bags, which have collected more than 20 million oyster spat.
The young oysters were subsequently transplanted to the Gandy’s Beach Oyster Restoration Enhancement Area.
Post-plant surveys over the last six years have demonstrated a viable oyster population in the previously barren area.
Macro-faunal biomass surveys show that many species are inhabiting the restored area.
