Detailed description is This trail, once a railroad, runs from Appalachia to Big Stone Gap along side the scenic Powell River. ****CAUTION the two bridges should NOT be crossed until they have been repaired.****. . A new addition to the Rails to Trails system, this 1.5 mile hike is packed with a great deal of fun and adventure. Your first taste of adventure is at the very start of the trail as you cross an old Warren through truss Railway Bridge also known as the Louisville & Nashville Appalachia Bridge that was built in 1922. With rickety planks, no good hand railing and at a dizzying 3 stories from Highway 78 and Powell River below, you want to be extremely cautious as you make your way across. . . Once across, the trial is lined through its entirety with wild flowers, including eastern red columbine, wild geranium and dwarf crested iris’s to name a few. After a short half mile walk you get to Bee Rock Tunnel. Once believed to be the shortest tunnel in the world, now known to be 3rd shortest tunnel in the world, this 47 feet 7 inch tunnel is chiseled out of a slab of rock protruding out of the hillside of Little Stone Mountain.. . Further down the trail, close to Dark Hollow, you will pass an old railway car axel sitting right off the path. This is a sure sign you are close to your second tunnel known as Callahan’s Nose tunnel. This 135 foot long tunnel is unique in its own right as the tunnel has been shored with bricks. Bricking was an earlier technique of shoring up a tunnel. After the turn of the century concrete was generally used to ensure the integrity. You can see stalactites starting to form on the ceiling of the tunnel as well as several large rocks that have broken free from the ceiling above, lying on the ground. . . Once through this tunnel you cross under an active Norfolk Southern railway on your way to a deck plate girder bridge that crosses you back across Powell River and Highway 78 on your final stretch of your journey. Approximately 200 feet in length, be weary of losing you footing here, as you will plunge 150 feet into the Powell River below. There are no hand rails and several railroad ties have rotted out and have significant gaps between them, so be extremely careful where you place you footing.. . If you do not turn around and make it across this dizzying bridge, you are only a half mile away from Big Stone Gap. You will stay alongside Highway 78 until the trail brings you out across from Pizza Hut, so it you are hungry you do not have to go far..
