Detailed description is Dedicated to preservation of Port Sanilac Michigan Lighthouse and keeping its history alive. Congress appropriated $20,000 for construction of a new coastal lighthouse to be established between Fort Gratiot and Harbor Beach on Lake Huron in 1885, the site was selected and purchased for construction to begin in the village of Port Sanilac, MI. Lit for the first time on October 20, 1886, the Port Sanilac Lighthouse still houses its original 4th Order Fresnel Lens and is an active aid to navigation. The focal plane of the light is at a height of 69 feet. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (tower only at this time). The historic dwelling, tower, oil house, privy and well are now being maintained to preserve them for future generations by the Shook family.
