Mother Magdalen Bentivoglio was the Abbess, appointed by Pope Pius IX, who chose her and her sister Mother Constance Bentivoglio to bring the Poor Clare Sisters to the United States. After failed attempts to set up the Poor Clare Monastery in New York, Cincinnati and Philadelphia, they were received in Omaha by the goodwill and generosity of Bishop James O’Connor who understood and appreciated the value of the contemplative life and mission of religious. It was with the support of Count John Creighton that the establishment was made possible. After Omaha, today there are nineteen other monasteries in the United States.. . The Poor Clare Sisters of Omaha, part of the Order of St. Clare, are cloistered Roman Catholic nuns, residing in a peaceful area of Northwest Omaha. . . Prayer is the sole lifework of the Poor Clares, and is how they serve God’s people. Followers of all religious faiths are encouraged to submit their prayer requests to the Poor Clare Sisters of Omaha. . . You are also welcome to celebrate weekday and Sunday Mass with the Poor Clares at the new monastery. There are also guest rooms available at the monastery for visits or retreats.
