Il famoso Ponte di Bassano del Grappa è tra i ponti più famosi al mondo..
Le prime testimonianze sul ponte di Bassano risalgono al 1124 e al 1209.
In quest’intervallo di tempo si rese necessario costruire un ponte che collegasse le due sponde del Brenta per motivi di carattere economico, sociale e militare.
Nel corso dei secoli fu più volte danneggiato e distrutto dalle acque del fiume e dagli uomini.
Tra XIII e XIV secolo il ponte fu oggetto di contesa con i vicentini.
Nel 1450 il ponte fu ricostruito ma già alla fine del secolo versava di nuovo in cattive condizioni.
Nel 1510 fu incendiato dall’esercito francese in ritirata e fu ricostruito solo nel 1522.
Nel 1524 fu rifatto in pietra e nel 1531 in legno.
Quest’ultimo fu travolto da una piena nel 1567, il progetto del ponte successivo fu affidato ad Andrea Palladio.
Il suo ponte resistette fino alla metà del Settecento.
Nuovamente distrutto dalle acque del fiume fu ricostruito nel 1750 ad opera di Bartolomeo Ferracina.
Dal 1796 al 1813 il circondario di Bassano e il territorio veneto furono percorsi e saccheggiati nel corso di sei campagne militari.
Durante le ultime due (1809, 1813) il ponte fu danneggiato e distrutto.
Ricostruito tra il 1819 e il 1821, resistette fino al 1945 quando fu bombardato dagli alleati per danneggiare i traffici dei tedeschi.
L’ultimo intervento fu realizzato dagli Alpini nel 1948.
Durante l’alluvione del 1966 fu danneggiato e negli anni successivi fu smontato e irrobustito.
A partire dal 1990 sono periodicamente in atto lavori di consolidamento e restauro.
