Detailed description is Le pont Battant est un des huit ponts routiers de la ville de Besançon. Il franchit le Doubs pour relier le quartier de La Boucle à celui de Battant.HistoireLe pont romain (160-1953)Succédant vraisemblablement à un gué, le pont Battant fut construit à l'époque romaine et comprenait alors sept arches. Conformément aux principes des géniaux architectes transalpins, le matériau utilisé devait résister à l’épreuve du temps : les Romains découvrirent non loin de Vesontio, près d'Avrigney, un calcaire blanc particulièrement résistant, quoique tendre qu'ils utilisèrent pour l'édification de l'ouvrage. Un bois de Autoreille où une carrière romaine a été localisée, porte le nom attribué à cette pierre : Vergenne. Les piles du pont étaient constituées de pierres polygonales, reliées par des crampons en fer scellés avec du plomb.Il fut, jusqu'à la fin du, le seul pont à franchir le Doubs, et a beaucoup servi aux échanges entre le secteur historique et le nouveau quartier pendant l'expansion romaine de la ville.À l'époque moderne seules cinq arches étaient encore visibles les autres ayant été enfouies sous le cardo qui allait devenir la Grande rue.Le pont était comme le Cardo, pavé de blocs de 2 m par 0,7 m, épais de plus de 35 cm. Il fut plusieurs fois réparé et restauré, élargi en 1688 époque où le quai Vauban l'empiéta d'une demi-arche, restauré à nouveau en 1729. En 1761, c'est l'ingénieur Quéret qui le sauva de la déconstruction souhaitée par la municipalité.
