What is GMRS?.
.
GMRS stands for General Mobile Radio Service, but is most often, simply called 'GMRS'.
The FCC states it this way, or you can skip the link and read this quote from the FCC:.
'The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a land-mobile radio service available for short-distance two-way communications to facilitate the activities of an adult licensed individual and his or her immediate family members, including a spouse, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and in-laws (47 CFR 95.179).
This includes communication between two or more licensees.
Normally, as a GMRS system licensee, you and your and family members and/or other licensees would communicate among yourselves over the general area of your residence or during recreational group outings, such as camping or hiking..
The FCC grants five-year renewable licenses for GMRS Systems.
The individual licensee is responsible for the proper operations of the licensed GMRS system at all times.'.
________________________________________.
Who can use GMRS?.
.
Any U.S.
citizen, without any felony convictions or prior license revocations, can apply for a license, then make use of the GMRS frequencies..
________________________________________.
Will I need a GMRS license?.
.
Yes..
Before any station transmits on any channel authorized in the GMRS from any point within or over the territorial limits of any area where the FCC regulates radio services, the responsible party must obtain a license.
The FCC usually grants GMRS system licenses for a five-year term.
While not all users will need a license, all users of GMRS must be covered by a license.
What this means is, at least one (1) immediate family member must have a GMRS license.
Immediate family members include your spouse, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and in-laws (47 CFR 95.179)..
There are two ways to get a GMRS license:.
1) BY MAIL.

I can't get, or, don't want to buy a GMRS license, so, what radio service can I use?.
.
First off, without having your own valid GMRS license, or being covered by an immediate family member's GMRS license, you may not legally operate on GMRS frequencies..
That being said....
For whatever reason you can't get, or don't want to obtain a GMRS license, there are still avenues open to you for your radio communication needs.
You may legally operate on any one (or all) of the radio services listed below, as they do not require a license..

________________________________________.
Does GMRS have rules it's users must follow?.
.
Yes, it does..
Users of GMRS must follow these FCC Part 95 Rules and Regulations..
________________________________________.
How many GMRS frequencies are there, and how may they be used? .
.
In total, there are twenty-three (23) individual frequencies allocated to GMRS users, these frequencies are broken down into two groups.
.
• The first frequency group is known as the 'primary' or 'regular' group.
To operate on these frequencies users must be covered by an active and current GMRS license..
• The second frequency group is known as the 'interstitial' or 'split' group.
To operate on these frequencies, while no license is required, the rules of operation are different..
When discussing what GMRS channels to use, it should be taken into account that not all radios in use by the group’s members may be the same (if they are, lucky for you!).
However, more often than not, members of a group will have different radios.
Some users may have pre-programmed 'off-the-shelf” radios (of which there is a vast variety), while others may be utilizing commercial grade, UHF-FM radios.
For this reason when deciding on a frequency to use, or to change to when the group is out in the field, it's best to avoid terms like 'Channel One' or 'Position One.' Most GMRS licensees use the 'designators' when discussing what frequency they will be using.
For example: the frequency of 462.550 MHz has the designator of “'550.' The complete listing of GMRS Designators may be found here..

What are the GMRS 'primary' or 'regular' frequencies, and how may they be used? .
.
There are sixteen (16) 'primary' or 'regular' UHF frequencies, sometimes referred to as 'channels' or the GMRS term 'designator.'.
.
• Eight (8) of these frequencies serve a duel purpose.
These are the 462 MHz frequencies..
• Simplex Use..
• Repeater Output..
.
• Eight (8) of these frequencies serve a singular purpose.
These are the 467 MHz frequencies..
• Repeater Input.
Simplex operation is not allowed on the upper frequencies..

What are the GMRS 'interstitial' or 'split' frequencies, and how may they be used? .
.
In addition to the primary GMRS frequencies, GMRS licensees may also operate on Family Radio Service (FRS)frequencies.
These frequencies are known as 'interstitial' or 'split' frequencies.
There are seven (7) of these frequencies..
What is a type accepted radio in the Family Radio Service (FRS)? To quote the FCC: 'Some manufacturers have received approval to market radios that are certified for use in both the Family Radio Service (FRS) and the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS).
Other manufacturers have received approval of their radios under the GMRS rules, but market them as FRS/GMRS radios on the basis that: Some channels are authorized to both services, or A user of the radio may communicate with stations in the other service.'.
GMRS licensees as stated before, may use pre-programmed radios or utilize commercial grade, UHF-FM radios.
That being said, regardless of the type of GMRS radio in use (pre-programmed or commercial grade), be aware that these frequencies can only be used for simplex operations..
As to the power output of a GMRS licensee on these frequencies, the FCC addresses this issue in Part 95 Section 95.29 (f).
Quote: 'Except for a GMRS system licensed to a non-individual, a mobile station or a small base station operating in the simplex mode may transmit on the following 462 MHz interstitial channels: 462.5625, 462.5875, 462.6125, 462,6375, 462.6625, 462.6875 and 462.7125.
These channels may be used only under the following conditions: (1) Only voice type emissions may be transmitted; (2) The station does not transmit one-way pages; and (3) The station transmits with no more than 5 watts ERP.'.
