Detailed description is Department of Philosophy at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University (LIU-Post) WHY STUDY PHILOSOPHY AT LIU-POST?. . • Our majors have been accepted to graduate programs at universities such as Columbia, Fordham, the New School, Stony Brook, Temple University, Queens University (Canada), and others. . . • The LIU-Post Philosophy Department is home to two institutes whose activities have included sponsoring talks by distinguished guest speakers, organizing student discussion groups, and offering students the chance to compete for cash prizes in scholarship essay contests.. . • Our department gives students the opportunity to study areas that other philosophy programs often do not cover. In addition to classes on traditional figures and movements in Western philosophy, our faculty also offer courses dealing with Islamic philosophy, Asian philosophy, American philosophy, and mysticism. . . • Advanced majors in our program are given the opportunity to, in effect, design their own directed reading courses – covering the philosophers or philosophical issues of their choice, with the professor of their choice.. . • Our department boasts an active Philosophy Club and nationally-recognized Honor Society (Phi Sigma Tau). Annual events include a holiday party in December, an end-of-the year party and Honor Society induction in May, and other meetings organized by students and their faculty advisor. . . • The LIU-Post Philosophy Department is unique in giving majors a high degree of individualized instruction. Approximately 40% of the elective courses we offer each semester are tutorials – giving students the opportunity to work one-on-one with a professor. This individualized attention pays off: in recent years, five of our students have presented at professional conferences. . . •We offer courses linked with other departments, in which readings are thematically connected in order to generate a broader understanding of the history of ideas. . .
