Originally from Dallas, Texas, I graduated from the Booker T.
Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (much like LACHSA here).
I had the great fortune at the time of studying with some local greats and also playing on the national stage with our high school jazz group, playing festivals such as the Monterey Jazz Fest (including appearances with Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove and Chris Potter) and attending the Brubeck Institute two summers in a row.
Also while attending ‘Arts Magnet’ I joined the school’s Latin Music Ensemble where we learned to play Cuban style salsa, which sparked an interest in the roots of Afro-Cuban music.
Then, with this group, we would go on to perform at the San Jose Jazz Festival and the San Juan Salsa Congress in Puerto Rico.
And eventually my interest in world percussion would lead me to join the African Dance Ensemble, as a percussionist, where our Guinean instructors would spark my curiosity even further..

After receiving a scholarship, I attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston where I focused mostly on furthering my understanding of Afro-Cuban percussion in it's rawest forms, but would stray on occasion to learn about Brazilian music, and the music of other South American countries with African roots.

Upon graduation I decided to thaw out for while moving back to Texas where I enjoyed playing with notable local acts, touring regionally, and playing a music that I loved growing up, the Blues.
Deceptively simple, playing this music opened my ears back to the depth and richness of American roots music.
And then after a year in New York City I decided I’d need some warmer weather and friendlier folks.
I moved to Los Angeles where I’ve been working/teaching as a drummer ever since..
