Rachel Kane established the nursery in 1980 for the purpose of collecting and growing heirloom flowering plants and herbs from the 17th, 18th, 19th and early 20th century.
While this aspect remains a specialty, we also grow a respectable number of perennials of a more recent vintage, a rather good selection of culinary and medicinal herbs, and one of the largest collections of phlox to be found anywhere in the country.
In the shrub yard we offer a selection of hardy flowering shrubs, including many native species, and old-fashioned favorites like fragrant mockorange and lilacs.
Currently we have about 900 varieties of plants at the nursery, detailed in our catalog, which is viewable on-line.
Most of the plants are field grown and proven hardy in our rigorous Zone 3 location..

There are nearly three acres of specialty display gardens and nursery beds which visitors are welcome to wander through during regular business hours.
The gardens include an English-style hedged herb garden, primrose garden, island heather beds and shade gardens.
A large lawn, bounded by a rustic pergola and phlox borders, is set up for summertime croquet, which visitors are welcome to play..

In the greenhouse, the focus is on antique, fragrant and rarely seen annuals, such as nicotiana, china asters, phlox and heliotrope, plus new favorites such as million bells and diascia.
Rachel also loves flowering vines, and we usually have a nice variety including morning glories, hyacinth bean, thunbergias, climbing snapdragons, etc.
There is always a good selection of culinary and medicinal herbs, such as sweet marjoram, basil, chamomile, cilantro, spilanthes and ashwaganda.
No chemical pesticides are used in the greenhouse or garden..
About our Plants.

Our Nursery Plants are Hardy:.
Our perennials are generally field grown and good-sized, with well-developed root systems.
They are typically two years old or more when potted up.
They are produced using organic farming methods, and are fed with organic fertilizers, manure or compost.
This, in our experience, makes for the healthiest plants.
We rarely use naturally based pesticides, but never chemical ones.
Many customers have attested to the vigor of our stock, and I think this is because we do not coddle our plants, nor do we over stimulate them with massive doses of fertilizers.
We pot them up in the fall or spring, but if we don't have what you're looking for already potted, we're happy to dig one out of the garden for you if possible!.

Our Mail Order Plants:.
In 2014 we are primarily shipping phlox, but have added a small selection of other plants, starting with our favorites heleniums and primroses.
We ship plants in April –June, and again in September-October.
This year all plants will typically be shipped in pots, 3 in.
square by 4-1/4 in.

The Gift Shop.

Our little gift shop is housed in the old wooden extension, and is packed full with useful and decorative items.
Summer hats are a specialty, ranging from crushable sun hats for the garden, to stylish beach hats, to showy numbers for Red Hat Society ladies.
We carry a nice line of versatile reversible ladies jackets, and a verging on the sumptuous array of shawls and scarves..

Naturally we sell tea, teapots, cozies and tea related items, plus jewelry, ironware, imported gifts and more.
Books on gardening or herbalism, tools, and concrete birdbaths and statuary will appeal to gardeners.
We have locally made items such as pottery, quilted pillows, quilts and handmade soaps, including intricately pieced jackets, scarves and tea cozies made by Judith, who is an accomplished seamstress, with a passion for experimenting with color.

Sometime in the mid-80s, Rachel and Judith were returning from a long summer drive and combined their voices in the perennial moan about the desperate need for tea.
Couldn’t we have just “murdered a cup”, says Judith, a true Britisher! “If only there was a good tea room – any tea room, for that matter, that could provide us with that precious liquid refreshment that will allow life to continue?” We realized we daren’t wait any longer for others to step to the breach and provide this essential public service, but had better take on the task ourselves, and so it was decided that Judith open a tea room at the nursery..

Beginning with a classic English Cream Tea menu of tea, scones and cucumber sandwiches, the menu has steadily expanded to include a variety of cakes and savory plates.
The menu is a la carte, and one can order anything from a simple pot of tea to a splendid Deluxe Tea, which qualifies as a substantial lunch.
And yes, we even serve coffee!.

Tea is a delightful and affordable way to entertain friends, and is a memorable way to celebrate events and gentle occasions such as engagement and graduation parties, bridal and baby showers, and retirement parties.
Combined with the pretty and educational display gardens, it makes a fine outing for any garden club, and is a perfect venue for Red Hat Society ladies to strut their stuff! We hope to see you this summer! .

The Tea Garden Café is open summer afternoons from Memorial Day to Labor Day, from 11:30 to 4:00, every day but Monday.
Teas are served in the flower garden, under a covered porch or, when the weather is inclement, in a little plant-filled conservatory.

Being an Englishwoman, Judith knows a thing or two about tea.
She certainly doesn't care for the pale and teid stuff that passes for tea so typically served in restaurants.
The old English adage "take the pot to the kettle, not the kettle to the pot" is her motto.
Here you will find tea made with boiling water, steeped and served in a china pot..

The tea list includes over 30 choices of black, green and herbal teas, including classics such as English Breakfast, Earl Grey and Lapsang Souchong as well as more unusual types, such as Rooibos (Red Bush), Peach Melba and Rose Petal.
Naturally, we also make coffee for those desiring a stronger brew.
For cold drinks, you can try iced tea or coffee, lemonade or spritzers..

Judith makes the scones herself every morning, from a tried and true recipe, and she also makes the strawberry jam.
Our kitchen staff add special savories and desserts to the menu on a daily basis.
Typical savory plates have included Artichoke Pesto, Mushroom Walnut Pate, and Tomato & Smoked Edam Tart.
All menu items are vegetarian.
There is no fixed menu - if you are on a budget, or in-between meals, you can simply order a pot of tea.

What is a Cream Tea?.

Cream Tea is an afternoon repast, which invariably includes scones and cream.
(High Tea, by the way, is something quite different, more on the lines of a simple working-class supper than a raised pinkie affair with cakes and dainties.) We offer several options, from a light Petite Tea to a substantial Deluxe Tea luncheon.
Our most popular Full English Cream Tea consists of two home-baked scones, served with freshly whipped cream and homemade jam, plus cucumber & herb sandwiches, and a choice of hot or cold drink..
Parties, Special Occasions and Large Groups.

Tea is a delightful way to entertain friends, and is a memorable way to celebrate events, or to hold a small meeting.
For private reservations, you may book either the screen porch or greenhouse for a minimum of 2 hours.
Each holds 12 people comfortably.
The menu can be specialized for your group..

Under cover, and spread between the screen porch, covered patio and greenhouse, we can seat 30 people.
For larger groups, we are at the mercy of the weather.
Groups of 10 or more should try to give us at least one week notice..

Groups of 15 to 30 should give us one months notice.
Private garden Tours can also be arranged for your group..
