Detailed description is A working farm since 1804. Originally built in 1804 as a cow farm and listed in: http://www.mass.gov/eea/docs/dcr/stewardship/histland/recon-reports/essex-with-map.pdf. as a historical site, the Paynter Farm has a history worth telling and preserving. As the newest caretakers, Amy and I have certainly undertaken a life changing path. Purchased from Bob & Daphnie Borden on May 30th, 2014 we started our move from Hamilton to Essex on June 1. . Daphnie was quoted: "May the next 'care taker' be surprised and delighted by all it has to offer..." We couldn't agree more! . Daphnie and Bob originally bought the property back in August 1981 and have spent the last 33 years working to improve the farm. From the fields to the gardens, attention to detail abound.. Looking out our windows to the 30,000 acre saltwater marsh below and the Essex River beyond, I'm reminded of my earlier years here looking out the same windows and helping to create the view that I can now enjoy daily. I happened to grow up just down the street a bit and would frequently amble by to "help" Bob and Daphnie clear the lower field of excess trees and all the brush that had grown up. "Help" was the key word here as I was just a little kid, but with guidance and patience they taught me the way to improve the land. I remember walking into the house after working the morning and Daphnie would be cooking bacon & eggs for all of us. Of course the eggs came from the hens that were on the farm and I became spoiled by the fabulousness of them! As a note, Amy and I surprised Daphnie with a phone call and asked if we could come by to see the place, as that afternoon I had heard it had come up for sale. We walked into the kitchen and was greeted by the smell of cooking bacon. To me, but she denies it, it was a trick to bring me instantly back to my childhood and the happy memories I had there. In my head, I bought the place on the spot, in reality it took a little time. Turns out she really was frazzled by the "surprise" visit and burned the bacon! . . Data on the history of the farm is a bit scarce, as I acquire more, I'll put it here. . I hear rumors that it was owned by the same family that owned the Poor Farm out on Conomo Point and that at one time, it was a brothel! Oh if these old walls could talk!. .
