Zlokalizowany jest w centralnej części Wyspy Południowej w Alpach Południowych i zajmuje powierzchnię 707 km². Został utworzony w 1953 roku. Tak jak pozostałe parki narodowe w Nowej Zelandii, jest zarządzany przez Department of Conservation.
