Detailed description is PAMHJ is a Non-Governmental Organisation working for the welfare and empowerment of the mentally challenged of Jamshedpur since 2004. Parents Association of Mentally Handicapped of Jamshedpur (PAMHJ) is a non-governmental organization which was founded by a group of guardians of mentally challenged children in 2004 for the welfare of such children and their families. Since then it has been making focused efforts for the empowerment and welfare of the mentally challenged with a special focus on the people suffering from autism, cerebral palsy, multiple disabilities and mental retardedness. PAMHJ is a member of ‘The National Trust’, and ‘Parivaar’( A national level federation of the parents associations of India) and working according to the guideline provided by these organizations.. . What we do: . . Education: PAMHJ believes that mentally challenged children need to be imparted education like any other children. ‘Going to school’ is essential for them to learn not only academic skills but also discipline, social skills, and practical skills for community living. PAMHJ provides such children an atmosphere where they can be educated as far as possible by its trained staff. General knowledge is taught as is appropriate for each child. The children frequently enjoy picnic and outings of educative value.. . Vocational training: It is necessary to equip mentally challenged with relevant occupational and vocational skills when they attain their adolescence period. This gave rise to the Multi Category vocational Training Centre. Vocational Training at PAMHJ started with training in Candle making, Diya making and Rangoli making. The effort here is to fully utilize the capacities of the mentally challenged individuals to be productive and economically less dependent. They get a small amount of stipend every month. Here the adults with mental retardation work happily alongside others. The organization is working In the way of providing more vocational courses for empowerment.. . Day Care Centre: . Mentally challenged require care for all their needs. Their families go through a lot to take care of them and often need additional support for few hours a day so that they can handle their other responsibilities. It is this need that the center fulfills.. . At present, there are 15 mentally challenged people enrolled in the Day Care Centre. They are being looked after and cared for by its trained staff. They are kept engaged through playing different educational games and learning art. They listen to music and at times watch TV.. . Implementation of the schemes for the mentally challenged:. PAMHJ is working to ensure that every mentally challenged have a disability certificate because its an important tool for them to avail the benefits / facilities / rights that they are entitled to, from the Central as well as State Government under various appropriate enabling legislations. It is working towards to bring awareness about the various laws and schemes for them working towards the implementation of the schemes of the central and the state government and the national trust such as Niramaya, Vivekanand Protsahan Bhatta, Indira Gandhi national pension schemes, Gyan Prabha, udhyam prabha etc.. . . Various other activities: . PAMHJ organizes various seminars, workshops and awareness campaign from time to time. The parents of mentally challenged children are trained on the ways of taking care of their children to Prepare them for independent living. Along with these, various competitions are also held according to the abilities of mentally challenged children.. .
