Detailed description is Το Παγκράτι είναι συνοικία του νοτιοανατολικού τμήματος του Δήμου Αθηναίων, μια από τις μεγαλύτερες και πολυπληθέστερες. Συνορεύει με το Κολωνάκι, την Καισαριανή, τον Βύρωνα, τον Υμηττό, το Νέο Κόσμο, ενώ βρίσκεται σε μικρή απόσταση από το ιστορικό κέντρο της Αθήνας. Αρχικά ονομαζόταν έτσι η περιοχή από τον ποταμό Ιλισσό και το Καλλιμάρμαρο στάδιο (σημερινή Λεωφόρος Βασιλέως Κωνσταντίνου) ως το λόφο του Προφήτη Ηλία στην οδό Υμηττού ενώ με την ανάπτυξη της Αθήνας επεκτάθηκε ανατολικά ως την οδό Νικηφορίδη, βόρεια ως την Λεωφόρο Βασιλέως Αλεξάνδρου και νότια ως τη Λεωφόρο Ηλιουπόλεως και το πρώτο νεκροταφείο. Βάσει του γενικού πολεοδομικού σχεδίου της Αθήνας (ΦΕΚ Δ 80 - 04.02.1988) το Παγκράτι ως συνοικία περιλαμβάνει τις εξής γειτονιές (δημοτικές ενότητες): α) Παγκράτι (Άγιος Σπυρίδωνας -άλσος Παγκρατίου), β) Πλαστήρα (από την ομώνυμη πλατεία), γ) Ρηγίλλης (περιοχή Προεδρικού μεγάρου), δ) Βατραχονήσι, ε) Πινακοθήκη, στ) Προφήτης Ηλίας, ζ) Παγκράτι 2 (κέντρο) και η) Στάδιο που περιλαμβάνει τη πλατεία Βαρνάβα και το Μετς. Στην πράξη ωστόσο η περιοχή της Ρηγίλλης έχει διαχωριστεί από τη συνοικία του Παγκρατίου.Η αστική αυτή συνοικία της Αθήνας ονομάστηκε έτσι από τον Παγκράτιο Ηρακλή λόγω του ιερού του Παγκράτους Ηρακλέους που βρέθηκε μεταγενέστερα από την ονομασία της περιοχής στη συμβολή των οδών Βασιλέως Κωνσταντίνου και Βασιλέως Γεωργίου Β', ενώ μια λιγότερο πειστική εκδοχή θέλει το όνομα νεότερο, να προέρχεται από κάποιον μοναχό Παγκράτιο που έζησε στην περιοχή κατά την Τουρκοκρατία. Κύριο αξιοθέατο της περιοχής είναι το Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο. Στο Παγκράτι βρίσκονται επίσης η Εθνική Πινακοθήκη, το Ωδείο Αθηνών, το Πολεμικό Μουσείο, το Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο και το Πρώτο Νεκροταφείο Αθηνών καθώς και πλήθος πλατειών όπως οι πλατείες Σταδίου, Ιλισσού, Ρηγίλλης, Αγίου Σπυρίδωνος, Βαρνάβα, Πλαστήρα, Προσκόπων, Προφήτη Ηλία, Παγκρατίου και Μεσολογγίου ενώ πολλοί δρόμοι του είναι πεζοδρομημένοι.
