Detailed description is PUC and the Land Trust of Napa County seek to permanently protect, preserve, and manage over 850 acres of Angwin forestland.
Pacific Union College has been blessed with the ownership and management of forest lands adjacent to our campus since the early 1900s when the college first moved to Angwin.
The exact size of the forest has varied over time with land purchases as well as sales to raise capital to support our educational mission.
The current college administration is interested in stabilizing this fluctuation by selling a conservation easement (CE) to the State of California, which entails giving up rights to development of the land to assure that the forest will always remain intact and managed as forest land.
At the same time this opportunity allows the college to raise needed funds for our education programs.
Our identity at PUC is deeply connected to our forest, and we are excited to have this opportunity to preserve our forest for the benefit of the PUC Family and the greater surrounding community.

The PUC Forest supports significant wildlife habitats and rare plants, as well as the watershed of Moore Creek, a key source of water for Lake Hennessey and the main water supply for the City of Napa.
The forest has the second highest biodiversity on a parcel of land in Napa County and provides habitat for the federally-listed Northern Spotted Owl along with several special status plants.
Notably, the coast redwood, as the PUC forest includes some of the eastern most stands of redwood in the world.
Because these redwoods have survived in hotter and drier conditions than other redwoods, they hold great interest for scientists who are concerned about the effect of climate change and whether these stands could prove useful in perpetuating the species.
In addition, the forest is used extensively for recreation and events by the PUC student body, faculty, and staff, as well as members of the Napa Valley community.

As part of certain public funding requirements, the college has prepared a comprehensive plan on how the forest will be managed over time.

A primary concern of the plan is fire safety and managing the forest in a way to reduce the risk of a devastating wildfire.
