「５０周年を迎えて、新たな一歩」（館長 小田 誠）.

おたる水族館は昨年の７月に、1958年の北海道博覧会の海の会場として誕生してから50年の節目の年を迎えました。そこで記念企画として、半世紀の沿革を振り返る「歩み展」と、全国の水族館に先駆けて公開した動物ショーや国内初の繁殖に成功した生物たちを、パネルや生体で紹介する「水族館が初めて物語」の２部構成で実施しました。.

「歩み展」では大勢の観客で賑わった道博会場の様子、そして1974年に建て替えられた現在の水族館の建設やその後の人気動物の導入に伴って新設された施設などを、時代順に写真を添えてご紹介させていただきました。.

一方、「初めて物語」ではおたる水族館の名を全国区にしたトドのショーを皮切りに、一昨年に日本動物園水族館協会から北海道に生息する希少魚のエゾトミヨで表彰された繁殖賞まで、半世紀の中で繰り広げられた数々の動物たちのドラマやエピソードなどを写真とコラムでご紹介させていただきました。.

企画全体としては時間的な余裕も無く、しかも旧水族館を知る者も少ない中にあって、現在の水族館になってからの34年間に偏重したきらいもありましたが、現在の水族館の開業と同時に飼育係で勤めた私にとりましては、旧館時代の先輩が作り上げたトドショー以降のすべては直接、間接を問わず、水族館の歩みは自らの歩みとも言えると手前勝手に思っていますので、それなりに満足いくものでした。.
その内容のごく一部をご紹介しますと・・・・・.

1978年には神経質で調教が難しいとされてきたアザラシのショーを国内で初めて成功させました。これは直属の部下の仕事です。1981年には私と二人の部下が力を合わせ、道内で初めてバンドウイルカのショーを作り上げ、南米の沿岸に生息するアシカ科のオタリアと共にイルカスタジアムのオープンを飾りました。.

また、この間に受賞した繁殖賞も11にのぼります。.
そして「歩み展」の最後は、ネズミイルカとゴマフアザラシを飼育展示する「ほのぼのプール」の改修事業を取り上げました。このプールはそもそもネズミイルカを飼育してきた施設ですが、自然界での生息域を同じくするゴマフアザラシと一緒にすることで水族館の中に小さいながらも自然を再現しようとの構想に基づくもので、プールの一部にアザラシのための陸を作りました。ひとつの空間の中に異なった種類の海の哺乳動物を飼育するのは、世界的に例を見ない展示であることから「初めて物語」の要素も含んでいますので、記念企画全体を締めくくるのに相応しいものとなりました。.

さて、50年の節目を飾ったおたる水族館にとって平成21年は更なる一歩への船出の年です。これまでと同様に新しい生物の飼育展示にチャレンジするも良し、これまでにない展示方法を考案するも良し、そして教育的な要素を盛り込んだ特別展や企画も良し。.
