Detailed description is Oskar the Blind Cat & Klaus.Oskar was born on May 5th, 2011, and was adopted by us on July 11th of that year.
He was an outdoor cat living on a small farm in the Loess Hills of western Iowa.
Oskar's condition is a severe form of microphthalmia, which simply means that his eyes never fully developed due to certain genetic factors.
Despite missing his sense of sight, Oskar is a very healthy and very happy cat.
He functions perfectly well in our home using his other senses, and many visitors don't even realize that he's fully blind! This Facebook page was set up in November of 2011 to share our experience with raising a blind cat.

Oskar's sidekick and best friend is known as "The Klaus." He is a very sweet former stray, and was adopted by us as an adult in December of 2006 from The Cat House in Lincoln, Nebraska.
We suspect that he was four or five years old at the time of his adoption.
His right ear lays flat due to possible damage from excessive scratching caused by ear mites, or perhaps a nasty fight.
Klaus also has other scars on his body, including a massive one on his back, as well as a few missing teeth.
Life on the street is tough on a kitty, but he's spoiled rotten now!.

Although we kept photos and videos of Oskar (taken almost daily) for our own records, we decided to upload to YouTube a video of Oskar playing with the stream of air coming out of a hair dryer in October of 2011.
We shared the video with our family and friends via Facebook, but through the magic of the internet, Oskar's antics went viral.
The video was shown on CNN, Ellen, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, and other programs around the world.
With the interest Oskar was generating online, many people had questions about the little guy.
We decided to quickly edit and add a second video of Oskar from the clips we recorded on his first day with us.
That video shows Oskar with his first toys, and it eclipsed his hair dryer video in popularity by the end of the year.
It even won the first grand prize at "The Friskies" in November of 2012.

A portion of our Facebook posts is dedicated to Oskar and Klaus, but we also share information about many special needs animals that need to find homes.
So far, Oskar's fans have been extremely successful in sharing these posts and in finding perfect matches between person and pet.
