W amerykańskiej i brytyjskiej historiografii ofensywa ta jest także znana jako kontrofensywa pod Mortain.Rozkaz natarcia pochodził od samego Adolfa Hitlera, który chciał wyprzeć siły 1 Armii Stanów Zjednoczonych z terytoriów, które ta zajęła w czasie operacji Cobra oraz późniejszych tygodniach.
