Detailed description is 寺のふうがるが、地元登米市南方町にあります、大嶽山興福寺を少しずつ紹介していきますｍ（。。）ｍ ”大嶽山沿革”. 大嶽観音は、平安時代の初期大同2年（８０７）に征夷大将軍坂上田村麻呂の創建、京都清水寺延鎮法師の開基という。. 今より1千有余年、幾多の兵火などにより古記録を失い、詳細は判明しないが、近世の縁起によれば夷賊の将を大武丸といい、田村麻呂はこの夷賊を当山において殺害、遺骸を７分し、７か処に分葬してそれぞれ観音浄閣を建てたが、大嶽観音はその一つと伝えられている。当時東に興福寺、西に天王寺の2寺と４８坊を造営し、国家鎮護、夷賊の教化にあたったという。. 以来幾多の興廃をたどり、葛西清重が当地方を領有の時、その一族葛西近江守が当地を預かって細川城におり、その弟重高が了全と号して興福寺を再興、大嶽観音の別当となり護持にあたったと伝えられている。. のちに葛西氏は、小田原の陣に不参加のため、天正19年豊臣秀吉によって領地がすべて没収され、葛西の当主晴信は滅亡、当地は豊臣の家臣木村伊勢守吉清に与えられたが、悪性のため葛西、大崎などの遺臣の一揆が起こり、佐沼城を囲む。蒲生氏郷、伊達政宗が鎮圧を命ぜられ、この乱は平定されて当地は伊達氏の所領となった。このとき、当山の別当天了は一揆方に加担して討死、所領は没収、寺塔も観音堂を残すのみとなった。. 元和5年、三学坊永盈が亘理坂本より来りて観音堂の別当となり、荒れた寺塔の復興にあたったので、後世になって中興の祖という。. 天了の参戦によって寺領は召し上げられ、観音堂周囲の山林も仙台領の用材林となっていたが、元禄時代に入ってから観音堂及び別当所敷地が除地として拝領された。. 当地方が伊達家の所領になってからは佐沼は要衡の地として家老津田豊前景康が領主となる。津田氏は大嶽観音の名跡を重んじ、深く尊崇につとめた。4代春康の時、伊達綱宗の病気平癒の祈禱所（封内霊山10か処に下命）に推戴され、宝永5年5月開白、翌年6年5月祈禱中失火のため観音堂は焼失。同7年11月観音堂が再建されたことにより再び続けられ、正徳2年11月結願、以来伊達家の御祈禱所となっていたのである。. 明治維新となって神仏分離令が出され、明治5年興福寺は、箟峰寺の末寺として天台宗に帰入したのである。観音堂は昔のままに独立して寺が管理者となっていたが、昭和15年宗教団体法、仏堂整理要綱が施工され、観音堂は興福寺に所属、現在は同寺の本堂として祀られている。
