At that time, the name was changed from Tuscaloosa Institute to Stillman Institute.
The institute was a concept initiated by the Reverend Dr.
Charles Allen Stillman, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa "for the training of colored men for the ministry".
