While pursuing a Master’s Degree in Special Education, I decided to start an elementary grades tutoring service to help dyslexic students, as well as other general education students struggling in reading and math. I was amazed to learn that 20% of the population suffers from some degree of dyslexia. It is alarming to realize how unprepared most educators are to help dyslexics overcome the literacy obstacles they face. The majority of educators, even those with advanced degrees, have received little if any explicit literacy training with regards to dyslexia. For that matter, very few individuals in North Georgia are utilizing best practice, research-based curricula to tutor dyslexics. After extensive research, it became evident that an Orton-Gillingham influenced multisensory approach to literacy instruction, such as the Barton Reading and Spelling System, would be the most effective means of improving the reading, writing, and spelling skills of individuals with dyslexia.. .
