New Zion Hill Landmark Missionary Baptist Church

245 Eastabuchie Rd

Forrest,

Mississippi,United-states - 39465

Detailed description is We believe in an assured, eternal knowing salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
According to church and school records, along with a book on Morriston history, written by Bro.
Arlice and Sis.
Alice Moore and Bro.
Leonard Slade, the area was settled in the early 1800's.
It was established on Tallahala Creek because there was a lumber mill, syrup and grist mill, turpentine still and a cotton gin operating nearby.
These businesses drew families like the Moore's, Shows' and Nobles' to the area..
.
In 1838, Tallahala Baptist Church was organized due to the mission efforts of Bro.
R.J.
Loper, the grandfather of Bro.
B.J.
Loper.
He traveled by horse and buggy to hold services at churches in Richton on Friday nights and Saturday morning, then traveled all day to preached Saturday night and Sunday at Tallahala.
These church services often lasted all night and families brought meals and bedding for their children so they wouldn't have to leave and miss any of the service.
Bro R.J.
was well respected in the surrounding counties.
He was called on so often to preach that it was said; he would often plant his crops and not return from preaching until it was time to harvest them.
In June 1908, Macedonia Baptist was organized and Bro.
Loper became their pastor.
He died 1949, at the age of 93, having dedicated more than 60 years to the Lord's work..
.
In the early 20's some of the community felt a need to establish a Baptist church in addition to Macedonia.
In July 1923, Mars Hill Baptist Church was organized and it was for here that most of the charter members of New Zion Hill came from during the mid 1940's.
A group of the members chose to begin meeting elsewhere due to doctrinal differences involving mission boards and salaried pastors.
The group first met on plank benches in Bro.
Haskel and Sis.
Leecy Shows' yard.
At the time, they lived on Morriston Road, in the home directly across from where Tim and Jeannie Nelson live now.
Mr.
Roland Hill gave the church 2 acres of land about a quarter mile from Bro.
Haskel's, but it was low lying and the group felt would be unsuitable for a cemetery.
They returned the land to Mr.
Hill and Bro.
A.L.
Nobles tried to buy land below his home on Eastabuchie Road.
When the timber company learned it was for a church, they donated the land.
Bro.
A.L.
and Bro.
Claude Grayson cut logs and hauled them to the M&D lumber Co., co-owned by Bro.
Arlice Moore.
He milled the logs and the group began building a church.
According to church minutes, it was during this time that the group was invited by Bro.
Burnis Nobles to meet at his home for services.
It was located just above where the church is now.
It was under construction and empty, so the church was to meet there for over a year while the church was completed.
It was in this house that the organizational meeting was held.
.
.
On November 2, 1947, Bros.
R.E.
Anderson and J.P.
(June) Hartfield moderated the organizational meeting of New Zion Hill Landmark Baptist Church.
Thirteen members came with letters in hand from Mars Hill and Leeville churches.
They presented their own letters to the church, were accepted and the covenant was adopted.
Pastor call and church clerk selection was set for two weeks.
On November 16th, Bro.
Hartfield became the first pastor and Sis.
Hazel Nobles was elected the first church clerk.
Services were set to be held consecutively, once a month, Saturday night, Sunday and Monday night.
This was because Bro.
Hartfield lived in Gulfport and transportation was difficult and limited.
The church began to add members in the next few months and soon services increased to twice a month.
The offerings recorded range from canned foods to fresh eggs in the early days, to the church voting to give Bro.
Hartfield at least ten dollars a month from Sunday School offering due to his travel cost from Gulfport.
Bro.
Hartfield's yearly offering for 1947 was $22.00 and for 1948 was $145.43.
In 1951, services went to bi-monthly and to full-time in 1956.
The church met with the Black Creek Assoc.
for the first time in October 1950.

.
In 1978, the church began updating the church building to its current size and in the last several years, the Lord has blessed the church with more improvements.
New Zion Hill celebrated its 50th Anniversary on November 2, 1997.
We were blessed at the time to have charter members, Bro.
Arlice Moore, Sis.
Elva Grayson and Sis.
Leecy Shows still with us.
Since then, they have all three went home, but like the rest of our patriarchs, they left a great example to follow.
Our membership was 74 then and has grown to over 130 since.
Bro.
Herbert and Sis.
Evelyn Moore, are the longest recorded members, having both joined on July 8, 1962.
The Lord has richly blessed that small group of thirteen to steadily grow.
Those first members still have second, third, and fourth generation families attending, along with many other wonderful people..
