Detailed description is Since 1984, New Kingdom Trailriders (NKT) has provided equine-assisted therapeutic programs for the educational and recreational benefit of physically, mentally, and emotionally disabled individuals in the Quad Cities.. . Today, NKT works with 90-100 studen NKT Programs. Beginner and Intermediate Classes are for riders just beginning to incorporate horsemanship skills into their therapy program. Riders learn skills such as staying on task, following direction and increasing vocabulary, as well as gain from the physical benefit of riding and being in a structured class. A positive self-image and self-confidence are nurtured as riding skills are learned. Private lessons are available at all levels. . Competitive Riding Programs are offered for riders eight years old or older who have achieved the intermediate level and require minimal assistance. These riders compete in 4-H and Special Olympics shows. The emphasis of the program is on developing independent riding skills. In Special Olympics, NKT riders compete annually at the state level. In 1995 and 1999, riders competed at the international level at the Special Olympic World Games. . Recreational Riding is offered to many adults with physical challenges, highly functional mentally handicapped individuals, or those recovering from accident or stroke as well as our military veterans thru Horses for Heroes. Because they are able to think and reason at a higher level, these riders ride as independently as their disability allows and work to refine horse/rider communication while enjoying the physical benefits of horseback riding. . Field Trips are one-day horse experiences that are a popular offering to groups as an educational or recreational outing for both able-bodied and disabled children. In addition to the opportunity to ride a horse, other activities might include learning about care, grooming and feeding, riding demonstrations or art activities, and are tailored to the interests and learning capabilities of the group. . . Horses for Heroes is offered to our military personnel who want non-traditional therapy. We provide services for PTSD, TMI, Limb loss, reacquainted to everyday life, etc… Any age can benefit from the program and by being involved with equines. The vision is to facilitate horse therapy in hopes of mutual healing between horses and service members. The program is here to help, here to get people involved with horses so that they have more thorough understanding and appreciation for the healing power of the horse. Together, horses and veterans can strive towards a new lease on life. Though using horses to help treat a variety of physical and psychological issues has been a part of therapy programs outside the military, the military only officially recognized equine therapy as beneficial recently, offering wounded warriors an opportunity to participate in Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International’s "Horses for Heroes" program. Those of us involved with horses know what a wonderful gift they are in our lives. For the wounded soldiers in the therapy program here, the horses are a fitting gift for those who have sacrificed so much in the name of freedom.. The Carrot Club is a weekly stable management program for NKT riders and siblings. An educational program, activities might include aspects of stable management, learning what a horse eats, the responsibility of caring for a horse, the colors and breeds of horses, and grooming and showing a horse. . Volunteer Training for volunteers aged 14 and older, is conducted in the spring before classes begin as a means of training new volunteers wishing to help with the classes.
