A birth doula is an experienced labor companion who provides the woman and her partner continuous emotional support and physical comfort measures during labor, as well as assists in providing information before, during and after the birth journey. A postpartum doula provides care to the family after the birth with breastfeeding assistance and newborn care. . . As a birth doula I understand the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman during labor. I assist the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their birth plan and stay with the family through the entire labor and birth process offering many different physical comfort measures. I am also there as an objective viewpoint to assist in getting the information a woman needs to make good decisions and will facilitate communication between the laboring woman, her partner, and the clinical care providers.
