The first Ambulance Service operating in Murray- Calloway was Mercy Professional Ambulance. It was privately owned by a Mr. Jack York from 1973-1980. During this time the service only offered Basic Life Support. . . In 1979, Mr. York realized that the service as a private entity could not keep up with the demands of a growing community. So he sold the Certificate of Need to Murray- Calloway County Hospital. The new name of the service was Murray-Calloway County Hospital- Ambulance Service. . . The service began operating under the new name on January 1st, 1980. . As times changed and the need for higher advanced care in the prehospital setting, the service began operating as an Advanced Life Support agency on a ‘part time ‘basis. They soon realized that this concept was not benefiting the citizens of Calloway County and the Director; Jerry Gorrel began teaching paramedic Programs at the Hospital to move the department into a full time ability of ALS 24/7. In 1988 the service instituted a 24 hour per day/7 days a week with ALS coverage. . . Today, Murray- Calloway County EMS is owned and operated by Murray-Calloway County Hospital. The service is responsible for all Emergency and Non-Emergency request inside Calloway County. In addition, the service is responsible for all interfacility transfers originating from Murray-Calloway County Hospital. Murray-Calloway County EMS is a not for profit charitable organization. We are licensed by the Kentucky Board of EMS to provide a Class I advanced life support and basic life support ground ambulance service to Murray-Calloway County Hospital. Murray-Calloway County EMS is governed by a Board of Directors that receives no compensation for their function on the Board. . .
