Listori'u yenip Dünya Şampiyonu oldu. Bu zaferden sonra dinini değiştirip İslam dinine geçti ve Muhammed Ali ismin aldı. Maç öncesinde rakibinin moralini bozmak için makineli tüfek gibi konuşan Ali, çok sevdiği boksa ara verdi ama 1967'de boksa tekrar geri döndü.
