Olivet Baptist Church ehind Mount Olivet Baptist Church in downtown Columbus is a pop-up museum holding the church's history that testifies to how the church can be more than a place of worship to many African-Americans.. . There's worship, and then there's the services churches have historically provided their communities, including acting as a repository of important records.. . "It helps to chronicle not only the history of our church, but the progression of African-American people," said Senior Pastor Charles E. Booth.. . That's why it's important that black churches keep their records; sometimes they're the only way people can get government benefits or trace their ancestry.. . Aline Davis, a member of the church, knows the importance of church records firsthand. When she was helping her uncle apply for Social Security benefits, the only document she could find that included his age was his baptismal record from the Kentucky church he attended growing up. Without it, he may not have gotten the money he needed, she said.. . Davis, who calls herself a history buff, helped to create the Mount Olivet museum.. . From the outside, 427 E. Rich St. looks like any other aging brick house. Inside, church members have transformed it into a place of historical reverence — a place to showcase and celebrate the church's past.. . There's a room about Booth's 39-year tenure as pastor, a corner to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and places for record books, photos, scrapbooks and more.. . The museum includes an old pulpit and organs that were stored on church property. Members have dropped off items from their personal collections, including photos and programs. There is information on each of the church's nine pastors, as well as ledgers of membership, attendance, baptisms, marriages and funerals dating back to the 1920s.. . Now treasured, many of those records once were thrown out, but a member of the church, since deceased, recovered and kept them. That member's daughter gave the records to Davis.
